"THREATENED SPECIES"
LESS THAN 500 LEFT IN THE WILD!!!!!
The East Slope Alberta Grizzly bear is a rare sighting, but can be found along the Eastern Slopes and foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Alberta.
Recent numbers released by the Alberta Government have shown there are under 500 of these native grizzly bears left in our province. After a huge public outcry February 2006 the Alberta Government finally announced the Spring hunt would be suspended for 3 years. Now, with the 3 year suspension of the grizzly hunt set to expire in just over a year, your support is needed more than ever. When we first spotted this bear, quickly we realized that it was an East Slope Grizzly, a bear that we have been trying to photograph for years. Immediately our hearts started pounding. This bear was busy digging up hedysarum roots along side a road just outside Jasper National Park, Alberta. We had spent the entire week-end photographing wildlife and had just started to head home when we came across him. We quickly grabbed our camera gear out and started shooting. It was amazing to see him digging, such a powerful animal. After an hour the bear eventually went and laid down inside the forest, we then realized just how privileged we were to have spent this time watching and studying this gentle giant. It was a cloudy and overcast May afternoon, these photos were taken with a Nikon F65 body using a 500mm Sigma lens and Sensia 100 ISO Film. Note: All profits from the Alberta Grizzly Bear gallery are donated to the Alberta Wilderness Association to help with the conservation of this animal.
